Slips blocking State Highway 8 near Roxburgh

State Highway 8 between Roxburgh and Ettrick in Central Otago is currently blocked in both directions by two slips. 

Teviot Rd is also blocked, meaning Roxburgh is currently inaccessible from the South as Teviot Rd was the diversion for previous slips.

People wishing to enter Central Otago from the south must consider travelling via State Highway 87 and 85, or State Highway 6 from Southland.

Seven houses have been evacuated on Tweed Street in Roxburgh. An evacuation point has been set up at the Roxburgh Fire Station.

Concerned residents are advised to contact emergency services.

Heavy rain caused flash flooding on Sunday afternoon. The rainfall is continuing, and there is widespread surface flooding in the Roxburgh area.

Central Otago District Council shared a photo of the flooding to their Facebook page. 

Police are advising motorists to avoid the area completely.
