Police have praised the crowd at Saturday night's Rugby League World Cup quarter final between Tonga and Lebanon in Christchurch.

There were no arrests or incidents of concern, says Superintendent Lane Todd.

"It's been really good. The crowd was really well behaved with no issues with alcohol."

One person was thrown out for intoxication, but alcohol consumption levels were low, police say.

The energetic, vibrant crowd maintained a great atmosphere, says Senior Sergeant Matt Emery.

"We had no issues whatsoever. The crowd was awesome."

Tonga are one step away from a fairytale Rugby League World Cup final after downing Lebanon 24-22.

Snr Sgt Emery says police will keep a strong presence throughout the central city on Saturday night.
