Police are appealing for anyone who saw two boaties in the Frankton arm of Lake Wakatipu to come forward.
Authorities say they received a report that two people in an aluminium boat appeared to be in trouble on Monday night and may have swam to shore.
Police attended the scene but were not able to locate anyone.
They urge anyone with any information to contacts Police on 03 441 1600.
