A diver has been missing for 24 hours in Wellington, after failing to return at the expected time.

The 24-year-old New Plymouth man was diving alone off the coast of Makara, and was expected to return at around 4:00pm on Monday.

Rescue teams have recovered a spear gun, a diver's float and a catch bag believed to belong to the man, and his car is parked at the beach.

Local boaties and members of the public are assisting a search team in the area, and police are seeking information from anyone who saw the diver's movements yesterday.

The man was wearing a black camouflage wetsuit and is described as tall and athletic, with medium-length blonde hair.

People with information can call Wellington District Police on 04 381 2000.
