5-year-old dies after being struck by car in Whāngārei

A five-year-old boy has died, after being hit by a car in Whāngārei. 

A St John spokesperson said crews were called approximately 2pm today. 

The crash involved one car and happened at the corner of Mill Road and Brighton Road in the suburb of Kensington, Whāngārei.

Police report that diversions are in place at Mill Road and Mercer Street and Nixon Street and Mill Road.
 
The boy reportedly was struck when he ran out in front of an oncoming vehicle which was merging from one lane to another.

Police have told Newshub the driver was an approximately 60-year-old male, but do not believe he was at fault and are treating the incident as a tragic accident.
