Auckland couple's herculean Christmas effort

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without at least a little sparkle.

One Auckland couple is drawing in the crowds to their Lagoon Way, West Harbour home after taking festive decorations to the next level.

It's the work of Lee Hamel, a cabinet maker by trade, who spends literally all year creating.

"Ideas just pop into my head and away I go. I just enjoy doing it," he says.

He makes a lot of it himself, upcycling broken decorations and leftover materials.

It's when night falls that the magic really happens, making the months of construction all worthwhile.

"It's fantastic," says one visitor.

"We've been coming each year for a few years now and seen it grow and grow," says another.

The Hamels never imagined the house would grow to have quite so many decorations.

"We started with three fairly pathetic strings of lights and a blow-up Santa, and then we just got the bug and it's turned into a bit of an obsession now," says Kirsty Hamel.

As for the power bill, they say it's not too bad - they're mostly LEDs.

The lights will come down on Christmas night, and, believe it or not, they'll be shopping for more in the Boxing Day sales as they start planning next year's display.
