Multiple Auckland petrol stations are out of certain grades of fuel, which could put a strain on those heading out of town for the holidays.

Royal Heights Mobil has run out of 91, and other stations such as Z in Glen Eden and Gull in Birkenhead have also reached their fuel limit, according to NZME.

Shortages were expected up until New Year's Day after a leak was found in Refining New Zealand's fuel pipeline in September. The discovery of the leak closed down the pipeline for 10 days, and it has been performing below maximum capacity ever since.

The refinery was alerted to another potential leak on December 10, forcing the pipeline to close for several hours. Leak detection software found nothing physically wrong with the pipe.
