Central New Zealand has been struck by a magnitude 4.9 earthquake on Thursday night.

The quake hit at 9:30pm, around 98km deep and centred 25km south-east of Nelson, according to GeoNet.

The quake could have been felt in Blenheim, Cheviot, Collingwood, Culverden, French Pass, Hanmer Springs, Kaikoura, Karamea, Levin, Martinborough, Masterton, Motueka, Murchison, Nelson, Paraparaumu, Picton, Reefton, Seddon, St Arnaud, Wellington, Westport, and surrounding areas.

Newshub reporter Annabella Garwood tweeted that the shaking was violent and caused her parents to gasp.

"My parents in Nelson just let out a gasp while talking to me on the phone. Anyone else feel it?"
