Serial drink driver caught six times over legal limit in Hamilton

A driver who already has nine convictions for drink driving has been caught committing the same offence, police say.

The man was nearly six times over the limit when he went through a police checkpoint in Hamilton over the weekend, and is now awaiting charges for excess breath alcohol.

The driver, one of 62 who were caught behind the wheel despite being over the legal alcohol limit, is currently in police custody.

One in every 148 of the 9200 drivers breath-tested by the Waikato and Bay of Plenty Road Policing unit was over the limit - a result Senior Sergeant Gillian Meadows described as "both astounding and disappointing".

"With the holiday season upon us, our staff are working hard to keep everyone on our roads safe, however we can't do it alone," she said.

"If you are planning on heading out for a few drinks with friends during the festive season, please make sure you plan ahead and either organise a sober driver or a taxi to get you home safely."

Snr Sgt Meadows said with Christmas Day less than a week away, they are trying to ensure that everyone remains "safe and happy".
