Man injured by stingray at Wairarapa

A man has been injured by a stingray at Riversdale Beach, Wairarapa.

While there were initial reports of a shark attack, police have since confirmed that the incident involved a stingray.

Wellington Free Ambulance told Newshub that a man in his early 30s was being flown to Wellington Hospital with a wound in his lower leg.

They said the injury had been classified as a 'status three', meaning a moderate wound.

The man's family told Newshub that a stingray barb had gone through his right calf muscle. He is in a stable condition and will be operated on tomorrow.
