Wellington police belt out road safety Christmas carol

Wellington police have responded to a 'CopCar Karaoke' challenge laid down by Waikato police, by putting their own safety spin on Christmas carol Feliz Navidad.

Officers from the capital made a light-hearted dig at Waikato police's lip-syncing video, saying they "actually sung" their version.

"Hey Waikato Police, we saw your challenge and we smashed it," the Wellington district police Facebook page posted.

"We made an original song and actually sung it!"

The video featured Mayor Justin Lester, fire, ambulance and police crews and even a police dog, changing the words of the song to put across a message about safe driving over the silly season.

"We want to wish you a merry Christmas, because we want to see you here for Christmas," they belted.

"We are going to be on the roads this Christmas to keep you safe this summer."

The video has racked up more than 56,000 views on Facebook within 10 hours.
