Auckland Drivers are being warned to check traffic ahead of time as traffic builds across the city for the long weekend.

Monday 29 January is Auckland Anniversary Day and the city is celebrating the first long weekend of the year.

The NZTA tweeted early on Saturday morning advising delays are expected headed both north and south of Auckland today.

NZTA traffic cams show large queues on the motorway near the SH1/SH20 interchange headed south.

Warkworth in particular is also expected to have some traffic build up due to the annual A&P show running until 6PM on Saturday and Sunday.

The Vector light installation on the harbour bridge will also open on Saturday night, prompting road closures in the area.

All four centre lanes on the bridge will be closed in both directions but the clip ons are expected to remain open.
