A bulk food brand is recalling its coconut milk powder after testing revealed it contained cow's milk.

On Tuesday, The Source Bulk Foods put out a recall notice for all batches of its product.

New Zealand franchise owner Andrea Watt told Newshub she was notified of the contamination the previous night by the master franchise in Australia, which imports the products to New Zealand.

"We've taken products off shelves and put up a notice in the store," she says.

The Source Bulk Foods operates two stores in Auckland - one in Milford and one in Kumeu.

Ms Watt was unable to estimate how much of the contaminated powder had been sold to customers, as the products are sold in bulk, but she told Newshub they "hadn't sold much, because we're a new business".

She says the company is working with the Ministry for Primary Industries to learn more about how the contamination occurred.

The recall applies to all coconut milk powder sold at the Milford store with the expiration date of April 24, 2018, and all coconut milk powder sold at the Kumeu store with an expiration date in November 2018.

The recall does not affect any other product distributed by The Source Bulk Foods.
