Auckland Anniversary Day holidaymakers can expect slow progress home on Monday, with multiple crashes holding up traffic.

Police were contacted at 2:24pm and emergency services are attending a two-car crash on the northbound section of State Highway 1.

The NZTA is warning motorists travelling on SH1 through Takanini to expect delays for most of the day due to the extra traffic on the road.

"Traffic is expected to be busy through this area between 10am and 7:30pm for northbound traffic today," a spokesperson said on Twitter.

"Road users are advised to expect delays and allow extra time for their journeys."

Travellers have been warned of similar delays headed southbound from Wellsford through to Puhoi, as travellers make their way home.

According to Google Maps, traffic is currently heavy through Dome Valley to Warkworth and moderate to heavy from Drury to Takanini.

Meanwhile one person has been killed in a crash on the Kaipara Coast Highway on Monday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the crash between two motorbikes and a car just before 3pm.

One other person was in a serious condition and a helicopter was dispatched.

The NZTA expects the highway to remain closed for several hours.
