Power has been fully restored to the national grid.

A fault on the national grid had cut electricity to more than 20,000 homes in parts of Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Coromandel earlier on Thursday morning.

Transpower says local lines in the Waikato and Coromandel regions will be progressively restored and electricity should return to all locations within the next 60 minutes.

Transpower apologised for any inconvenience caused by the outage.
