A water warning remains in Milford Beach due to leaking sewage with many other beaches across Auckland flagged as no swim zones by Auckland Council.

More centrally, Cox's Bay also remains a no swim spot and on the west coast Pihas North and South lagoons are red flagged.

Further north, Bethells Lagoon is also deemed to be hazardous for swimmers.

No swim zones are usually determined by the amount of fecal contamination in the water from exposure to sewage.

This often happens due to old stretches of pipe which easily overload during rainy weather and cause sewage to mix with rain run off or simply burst due to age and strain.

Residents of Milford discovered this first hand yesterday with raw sewage flowing through several homes along Shakespeare Rd due to a broken sewage main and causing a swim warning to put in place for Milford Beach.

Auckland Council estimates 15,000 homes in central Auckland alone are serviced by out-of-date plumbing infrastructure.
