The man is believed to have been stabbed during an assault in Christchurch, police say.
The man was taken to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition, after an alleged assault about 1.00pm at a Picton Ave address, in Riccarton.
Police are investigating the incident and are currently speaking to a woman, who is assisiting them with their enquiries.
Fire and Emergency NZ was also called to the scene, after a minor fire was reported at the same house.
Emergency services had cordoned off a section of the road after the incident.
