Helicopters were kept busy fighting two fires in the Queenstown area on Friday night.
The first was about 4:30pm in an area of forest near the old Wakatipu High School site and an industrial area in Queenstown.
After fighting that fire a helicopter headed to a grass fire at Jack's Point where a total of three helicopters were used.
The call about the Jack's Point fire came in about 6:30pm, a Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said.
The fire was reported to be in grass covering an area about 100m by 50m. When firefighters arrived it was covering an area of 400m by 500m.
Both fires are under control.
Three helicopters and units from Queenstown, Frankton, Arrowtown and Kingstown were used to fight the fire at Jack's Point.
Scorching temperatures have forced Fire and Emergency New Zealand to impose a total fire ban across Otago and Southland.
