Thousands of customers in Christchurch are without power on Monday afternoon, following unexpected power cuts.
As many as 7000 people lost power in two separate incidents, an Orion spokeswoman says.
She says more than 3000 have been without power since midday in the city's western suburbs, after issues at the Islington sub-station.
A further 4800 have been without power in the Riccarton and Sockburn area, since about 1pm.
Orion is investigating the cause of the outages.
NZTA adds several traffic signals are also out in those areas, as a result of the power cuts.
