A kitten has been rescued in Auckland after finding herself in the middle of a busy motorway.

A member of the public spotted the ginger and white kitten on the South-Western motorway, where police say it was "trying its hardest to cause several accidents".

Police found the kitten huddled up against the concrete barrier of the motorway, and she was named Maioro after the closest off-ramp.

When an officer approached, the kitten was "spooked" and "bolted across three lanes of traffic, narrowly avoiding the worst," Auckland City District Police said on Facebook.

The drama didn't end once she was safely inside the police car.

When the officer returned to the station, he couldn't find the kitten until he heard a faint meow coming from the within dashboard.

A trip to the mechanic revealed that the kitten had found her way inside from beneath the dashboard.

The dashboard was removed and the kitten was found tucked around a heating fan.

Police said she is recovering well and they hope to return her to her home soon.
