An Air New Zealand plane took three attempts to land amidst strong Wellington winds on Monday.

Video of flight NZ449 shows its first attempt to make the landing, with the wings swaying in the wind.

It's only a few metres above the ground when it lifts off again, to turn around and make another attempt.

The flight landed safely on its third attempt after doing two "go arounds", according to Wellington city councillor Chris Calvi-Freeman.

Patrick Crewsdon was a passenger on the flight, and tweeted that on the third landing the pilot "slammed the brakes so hard I thought the wings would tear off!"
