A teenage cliff jumper has been hauled from the sea in a dramatic rescue at the Coromandel's famous Cathedral Cove.

The Westpac rescue helicopter was called around 2pm, after the girl misjudged a jump into the sea and suffered a suspected spinal injury.

Witness Caleb van Essen said several people were jumping off the 10m- to 12m-high cliff, but the girl was the only one to be injured.

She was rescued from the water by surf lifesavers and the public was asked to move away from the right hand side of the beach to make room for the helicopter to land.

The girl was then transported to Auckland Hospital.

A spokesperson for the Auckland rescue helicopter trust described her injuries as moderate.
