A woman has drowned at Tahunanui Beach in Nelson.
Police were called to reports of the drowning at Tahunanui Beach, Nelson, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
A man and woman reportedly got into trouble while swimming at low tide in clothing and struggled to get back to the shore, police say.
The man managed to pull the woman, aged 29, out of the water at around 1.30am, but she died at the scene.
The man was taken to Nelson hospital in a moderate condition.
The death will be referred to the coroner.
