Dunedin has made an international alternative bucket list of up and coming travel destinations you must see.

The "scarfie" capital featured in The Reader's Digest list of "12 travel hot spots".

These hot spots may not be places on every intrepid traveller's list.

Dunedin placed 12th on the list, with the magazine describing the city as an animal lover's paradise, with dramatic landscape and exotic wildlife.

"Sure you've heard of Auckland, but what about Dunedin?" the magazine says.

"New Zealand's oldest city is making its mark thanks to its dramatic landscape, exotic wildlife and Scottish heritage.

"This animal lover's paradise is home to rare yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals and the only mainland albatross colony in the world."

A self-guided walking tour was recommended as the best way to see the city centre and its old Scottish Edwardian-designed buildings.

The other cities that appeared on the list were Gangneung (South Korea), Bournemouth (UK), Edmonton (Canada), Da Nang (Vietnam), Whitefish (Montana, US), Famagusta (Cyprus), Bilbao (Spain), Matinhos (Brazil), Cardiff (Wales), Guarapari (Brazil), and Oita (Japan).
