An item of concern was discovered on a central Auckland overbridge on Wednesday evening.

Emergency services arrived at the Newton Road overbridge around 7pm to investigate the package.

Once they arrived explosive experts were called to the scene.

The unidentified object was then removed by NZDF explosive ordinance disposal staff.

"Police CIB staff will make enquiries to identify the small object and ascertain why it was left on the overbridge," a spokesperson told Newshub.

At the time pedestrians were asked to avoid the area but traffic diversions were not put in place.

Nobody was injured in the incident and police have now left the area.
