They might be more used to rescuing cats from trees, but fire officers in Beachlands came to the aid of a horse stuck in mudflats.

The horse had been walking along the popular Auckland beach on Monday evening with another horse, when they both got stuck in the soft mud.

The older horse freed itself, but the younger one was not so lucky. The owners were forced to call the fire brigade, who came to the rescue.

Chief Fire Officer Shane Rutherford, of Beachlands Volunteer Fire Service, said it was stuck about half a kilometre from the shore.

They tried to keep the horse calm while officers worked on getting it free.

At around 8:15pm, after some careful digging by the firefighters, the horse clambered free and ran off.

Mr Rutherford said they hadn't been concerned by the incoming tide, but it was good to see it get out.
