A man has died after he was struck by falling rocks on State Highway 4.
He was one of a group of motorists who had stopped near the Raukawa Falls between Whanganui and Tongariro National Park on Sunday afternoon.
He was helping to clear a small slip that had blocked the road when he was hit by the rocks.
An ambulance that happened to be passing by helped motorists to recover the man from the rockfall, at around 5:45pm.
He died at the scene despite attempts at resuscitation.
People are urged by police to avoid travelling on State Highway 4 between Whanganui and Raetihi for their own safety.
