A man wearing one black sock, one white one and no shoes has robbed a restaurant in Napier at knifepoint.

The aggravated robbery happened at the Pita Pit restaurant on the corner of Kennedy Road and Georges Drive about 10am on Sunday, police say.

The man, who was armed with a knife, demanded money from the sole staff member, who placed an amount of cash into his bag.

The man then left the store heading in the direction of Thackery Street.

Detective Sergeant Craig Vining says it is likely the offender lives close by or was picked up by a car given his lack of footwear.

He was wearing dark coloured clothing and was carrying a black Puma backpack.

"The victim did everything right and was not harmed during the robbery," Det Sgt Vining says.

Police are appealing for witnesses and people with information to come forward.
