The formal search for a missing boy in the water at Sumner Beach in Christchurch has finished.

Reports of a 14-year-old boy missing in the water in front of the Sumner Surf Life Saving Club were received at around 3.00pm.

A rescue helicopter and surf lifesavers had been actively searching the water for the boy on Monday afternoon.

On Monday evening, a police media spokeswoman said police would continue to be in the Sumner area but there was no formal search.

Police were speaking with family members and making enquiries.

It is believed another boy who was with the missing boy at the time of his disappearance alerted emergency services.

Sumner Beach is a popular swimming and surfing destination in the east of the city.

In December three people were rescued from the beach after becoming caught in a rip.
