Firefighters are working to contain a wildfire in Christchurch.

The public has been asked to avoid the area, which is on the Cass Hill part of Governors Bay Rd.

The fire has burnt approximately 10 hectares of scrub and is challenging firefighters, due to hot and windy conditions.

Five crews and two helicopters are fighting the blaze.

No structures are currently at risk.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand asks the public to remain vigilant of possible fires across Canterbury, as they also work to contain two other fires in Selwyn and north of Christchurch.

It advises against activities, such as operating machinery, parking hot vehicles on dry grass and carelessly discarding cigarettes, as this may cause a fire.
