Five people have been taken to hospital after a serious crash east of Auckland.

Two cars collided on Whitford-Maraetai Rd at 11:30 on Friday.

Three people were trapped in one car after it rolled, with one person suffering serious injuries.

The other two passengers were taken to Middlemore Hospital in a moderate condition.

Two people in the other car also received minor injuries.

A police spokeswoman says the road was covered in oil after the crash and one car was blocking both lanes.

It was cleaned up overnight and the road has now reopened.
