Two men are safe and back on shore after their small aluminium boat overturned in an Auckland Bay.

Police were called to Mellons Bay in Howick just before 7pm on Friday night when a member of the public spotted the pair in trouble.

The rescue was a collective effort involving the Eagle helicopter, the police maritime unit, a local ferry that dropped off life jackets and another craft that towed the drenched men to shore.

Police said they were lucky conditions were calm.
