A Christchurch high school has confirmed the death of one of their students after he collapsed on the way to school on Tuesday morning.

In a letter to families, Cashmere High School principal Mark Wilson says Year 13 student Tom Fastier died after collapsing.

Despite emergency medical treatment, he could not be saved and passed away.

"Tom Fastier was an absolutely fantastic young man and student of our school," he said.

"The shock and sadness of his loss will be felt across our whole school community.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they attempt to deal with this sudden awful loss."

Mr Wilson says some of Tom's close friends were picked out from class and told of his death. The school then held an assembly for all Year 13 students to inform them.

The rest of the students in our school were informed by their period three teachers, he says.

School counsellors will continue to be available for students - and if students need to leave school, they are asked to contact their parents and sign out at the school office, Mr Wilson says.

Emergency services were at the scene on Opawa Rd after they were alerted to the incident shortly after 8:30am on Tuesday.
