Earthquake hits central North Island

A light but shallow earthquake has been felt by more than 1000 North Islanders on Tuesday afternoon.

The 4.4-magnitude quake hit at 12:51pm, 35km west of Ohakune.

So far, 1018 people have reported feeling the tremor on the GeoNet website.

Most of the reports came from New Plymouth down to Levin - although one person reported feeling a light shake from Christchurch.
