Ed Sheeran declares his Dunedin welcome 'awesome'

Ed Sheeran has touched down in Dunedin, and has given a glowing review of the transformation of the southern city as it welcomes him ahead of his shows.

On his Instagram story, the 'Shape of You' hitmaker can be seen zooming into signs of Dunedin that have the 'Ed' painted blue - a reference to the colour of his latest album, Divide.

"They've changed the name of their airport, so awesome," the star can be heard saying.

He even got a selfie outside the infamous giant street mural of himself, painted by local artist Tyler Kennedy Stent.

Earlier this month, Dunedin City Council attracted criticism for spending $8000 on the mural. The abstract design was approved by Sheeran's promoters and features the singer and his body art.

Mr Sheeran is set to play three shows in Dunedin this week following a string of successful shows in Auckland.
