The man who allegedly beat a four-month-old baby girl leaving her with 16 fractures was her father, it has been revealed.

The 28-year-old Howick man appeared in the Manukau District Court on Wednesday afternoon on a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, NZME reports.

The baby's mother, 30, has also been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice and is expected to appear on Thursday.

Middlemore Hospital staff found 16 fractures to the girl's skull, ribs, and limbs when she was admitted in February. Police believe the injuries were non-accidental.

The man was granted interim name suppression to protect the child's identity.

The man was remanded on bail until April 18, ordered to surrender his passport and to have no contact with his daughter or her mother.

He was also ordered to have no contact with anyone under the age of 16.
