High winds have cut power to a number of towns in the lower North Island on Thursday morning.

More than 700 properties across Palmerston North will be waking up with no power.

Five-hundred properties in Masterton are also out, and Hunterville and Stratford have been affected too.

Around 14,000 properties are affected in total.

One property in South Taranaki even had its roof blown off, but firefighters have managed to secure most of it.

Most places are expected to have power restored by 8am.
