MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the Central North Island, saying those under the storm can expect heavy rain and potential flooding.

"There is a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and early evening, producing localised downpours of 25 to 40mm/hr," a spokesperson said.

"Expect thunderstorm activity to ease tonight. Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips. "

Meteorologist Lisa Murray told Newshub residents of Waipawa, Otane and Waipukurau can expect to feel the force to the storm.

Those caught in the storm can expect to be affected by possible flooding and poor road visibility as heavy rain pelts the region.

Ms Murray says floods are not a given, but definitely a possibility.

"If you've got caught under it you could potentially see some surface flooding," she said.

"There is that potential there and we often see that with cells like this."
