Animal rights organisation Paw Justice shared an edited version of the "horrific" video in an effort to identify the man.
The video shows the man holding the tiny kitten in his palm and telling it how cute it is before he throws it to the ground. The original recording then shows him violently stomping the cat to death.
He then turns the camera back to his face, a move which Paw Justice is hoping will identify him.
"We have had to make a difficult choice and expose our followers to the reality of what we are fighting," the organisation said on Facebook.
"We want justice for this little soul, and before there are more victims, which means we need to know who he is.
"To the little one in the video. You won't be forgotten. We will fight for you and against what happened to you, and we won't give up."
Paw Justice co-founder Craig Dunn told NZME they were sent the video by someone "disgusted" after seeing it on an unidentified Facebook group.
It is not known where in the country the incident occurred.
Anyone with information about the man in the video can email firstname.lastname@example.org with "MAN" in the subject line.
