Police are appealing for witnesses as they investigate the unexplained death of a 17-year-old boy in Christchurch.

Emergency services were at the scene on Opawa Rd after they were alerted to the incident shortly after 8.30am on Tuesday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam says the boy, who was not wearing a school uniform, is believed to have been on his way to school when he died.

"We're still unsure what exactly has happened, possible medical event, so it will be a routine coronial investigation.

"It appears he was going to school, no suggestion of foul play at this stage."

Detective Cottam says "it is still undetermined how this young man has passed away, so it would be good if anyone has passed and seen anything happen, whether he has collapsed or anything untowards occured, we would be very keen to know that".

Members of the public who were in the area this morning and may have seen anything can contact police on 03 363 7400.
