Hundreds of people have taken part in a mass haka on Friday evening to commemorate New Zealand's wars and conflicts.

Te Tii Marae is open to the public this weekend to commemorate the New Zealand wars.

One participant in Friday's haka told Newshub this is a significant day in New Zealand history.

"Te pūtake o te riri [the national day set aside to commemorate the New Zealand wars] is important to our community and our nation to start a journey together around remembering, around learning our history, and our local communities and those battles that took place locally here," a spokesperson said.

"It's really important in terms of starting a national conversation around our New Zealand history."
