New Zealand is in store for a mostly sunny and warm Easter weekend, but a cold front is expected to bring heavy rain and wind to some parts.

Easter weekend forecast

Friday: Mostly fine, except the possibility of isolated showers in Auckland, Northland, Coromandel, Gisborne and Hawke's Bay. Rain could become heavy with thunderstorms possible in Buller, Westland and Fiordland.

Saturday: A heavy rain watch is in force for Fiordland, and high country areas of Otago and Canterbury are expected to get strong winds on Saturday morning.

Sunday: Expected to be mostly fine in the North Island, although a few showers might hit Auckland and Northland in the morning.

Isolated evening showers are expected in the Bay of Plenty and Coromandel Peninsula. The South Island will be fine apart from rain developing around Fiordland.

Monday: The final day of the Easter break is expected to bring mostly fine weather, except for some cloudy periods in southwestern Auckland and isolated showers in the Bay of Plenty and Coromandel in the morning.

In the South Island, rain should spread north into Westland and heavy cloud is expected in the south with a few spots of rain. The rest of the island should be fine.
