Weather: Downpours and thunderstorms for Saturday

  • 23/03/2018

New Zealand faces another wet Saturday with downpours and thunderstorms predicted to strike.

A slow moving cold front is making its way over the country, bringing with it weather warnings and the risk of flooding.

"Some active weather over the upper North Island today & tomorrow with PM showers & downpours," NIWA forecaster Chris Brandolino says.

"Our in-house experimental lightning forecast indicates robust thunderstorms also possible. Airflow isn't strong, so activity will be slow moving - watch for localised flooding."

It was a wet Thursday night for many spots around New Zealand, and the rain is expected to remain until Saturday.

"Takaka Hill recorded 70mm between 7pm and 7am," MetService says on Twitter.

"A severe weather warning for heavy rain remains in effect until early Saturday for northwest Nelson and northern Buller."

Fine weather is expected to emerge during Sunday for most of the country, apart from some remaining showers in the northeast and west.
