Wellington Police on the hunt for a wanted man have received some unexpected help after a picture of his unique tattoo went viral on social media.

Daniel McAlister cut off his monitoring bracelet and went on the run, prompting police to release his image on Facebook.

However the image was quickly picked up by people having a laugh at McAlister's mugshot, which shows him proudly raising his hand, which is emblazoned with a Honda logo tattoo, up to his face.

The Wellington District Police's post was later deleted, although a spokesperson told Newshub its unsure why that happened, as McAlister is still wanted.

The Facebook page Shit New Zealander's never say picked up the photo and posted it to their over 89,000 followers.

Over 1000 people reacted to the post and 972 commented, with many poking fun at McAlister's tattoo.

"Not many people know this but Hondas are actually really fast, just like the decision to get this tattoo," one person joked.

"Mugshots don't get much better than this," another wrote.

Anyone with information that could help the police catch McAlister can contact Wellington Police on 04 381 2700 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
