A US 21-year-old has been arrested after the car he was in crossed the centre line on a Northland highway on Monday evening, killing two people in a head-on collision.

A 24-year-old driver and his 26-year-old male passenger, who were in a car travelling south on SH10, died at the scene near Kerikeri.

A police officer came across the accident and performed CPR on the driver, but was unable to revive him. Two other men in the car were uninjured.

A 22-year-old male and a 20-year-old female were taken to hospital with minor to moderate injuries, police say.

The US driver was arrested and has been charged with two counts of careless or inconsiderate driving causing death.

He has been bailed with conditions and will appear in the Kaikohe Court on Friday.

Police are yet to establish the cause of the crash.
