Auckland drivers sink to new low to escape gridlock

Auckland drivers have been caught in shocking breaches of the road rules in an effort to escape traffic gridlock.

Video posted to the 'Shocking Auckland Drivers' Facebook page shows motorists putting lives at risk as they cross double-yellow lines on Triangle Rd, Massey to avoid the queue.

Several of the cars deliberately flout the law by driving for hundreds of metres on the wrong side of the road. Some of them appear to only narrowly escape causing horrific accidents.

One white Toyota attempts a dangerous mission across a narrow bridge, driving in the wrong lane to avoid the stalled traffic.

It's forced to pull over on the right-hand side of the road as a stream of oncoming vehicles comes towards it.

Then it pulls out for another go - only to be confronted by another car. Horns blare as the Toyota is forced to take evasive action to avoid a head-on collision.

It's not the only car putting lives at risk as drivers jump the queue, and it's stirred up anger on social media

"Oh my god!!! Outrageous... what's the point of having any road rules when they are regularly flouted?" one person says.

But others fear nothing is going to be done.

"Regular occurrence on triangle road Massey (sic)," the video poster says. "Cops don't even want to know."
