Dolphins wow swimmers at Coromandel Peninsula's Matarangi Beach

Swimmers at Coromandel Peninsula's popular Matarangi Beach have had an Easter weekend they'll never forget, thanks to a pod of curious dolphins.

Melissa Macpherson, from Auckland, was at her bach with her family on Sunday when they noticed around six to eight of the mammals in the shallows.

Video shows swimmers up close and personal with the dolphins, who weaved around their legs.

"It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience," Ms Macpherson told 1 News.

"What an experience to be had!"

The dolphins hung around for more than 30 minutes.
