Five graves in an Auckland cemetery were damaged when a car lost control over the weekend.

The accident took place in Manukau Memorial Gardens on Sunday morning. The driver was uninjured.

The graves of the following people - all of whom were buried around 2006 - have been affected:

  • Felise Emelio
  • Telesia Emelio
  • Sione Fanueli Finau
  • Varutatao Kapumareiti

Auckland Council is urging the family members of those buried in the affected graves to contact the cemetery to discuss what they would like to happen to their loved ones' remains.

So far, Manukau Memorial Gardens has only managed to contact one of the five families due to people having changed addresses or phone numbers without having notified the cemetery.

The Auckland Council will install signs in the area to notify people of the incident in the hopes that someone will pass on the message to the families.

Family members can contact Manukau Memorial Gardens on (09) 279 8232 or visit the cemetery office.
