A grief-stricken Whanganui cancer patient was found dead cuddling her dead dog, a newly released coroner's report has found.

Enez Lenore Crawford, 60, had called her daughter highly distressed that her beloved pet had died in October 2016, the report says, according to NZME.

Her daughter, Aisha Beazley, said she'd come around to visit later in the day - and found her mother lying on the floor with her arms around her lifeless dog.

Because of her mother's battle with breast cancer, she didn't think it suspicious - as Ms Crawford often fell asleep after taking treatment drug methadone.

But when she checked her mother later she found no pulse.

The report says Ms Crawford officially died of from a mixture of amitriptyline and methadone, according to NZME, although it was not a deliberate overdose.
