Hold onto your hats - there's a storm coming.

A severe weather outlook has been issued by MetService for the weekend.

The sunny weather across New Zealand on Thursday won't last, with a front coming off the Tasman Sea.

Heavy rain is expected to hit Fiordland and southern Westland on Friday.

The storms should then spread across the country, affecting the northern South Island and much of the North Island late Friday and Saturday.

Most of the nation will be affected from Saturday, with MetService moderately confident there will be rain from Northland to Otago.

During Sunday and Monday, rain and strong easterly winds will lash much of the North Island and upper South Island.
